
Assessment
Teachers should use several methods of assessment throughout this unit, both formative and summative.

Formative:

Students can be formatively assessed in many ways. The teacher can use aggressive monitoring on a daily basis during the practice sessions as students work on mastery description and dialogue.

3. the summative assessment for the entire narrative unit should be a full narrative, in which the
students' narrative techniques are assessed. In the past I have used a rubric like this:

A rubric is the best way to assess multiple skills like this. Students should be exposed to the rubric before writing the assignment. The teacher should grade an example narrative using the rubric, so that the students can see how it will be used on their work. I often provide students a checklist while they're writing, so they can double-check their work, and I give opportunities for students to revise before grading and after grading to improve their work and their scores.
