Instructional Problem

Some students arrive in 9th grade with a working knowledge of English Grammar; most do not. Teachers must be able to take the time to ensure students can identify at least:

  • verbs (linking and action)

  • participial phrases

  • prepositional phrases

  • adjectives

  • past tense vs. present tense

The other issue standing in the way of student success is a pandemic of non-motivation. Many students struggle with intrinsic motivation and simply won't write. This can sometimes be affected by interesting content or by scaffolding.

According  to  these  identified  instructional  problems, in  order  to  make  the  instruction more effective, the aims of the planned lesson are:

  • To motivate students by using collaboration, by using fun imagery and by offering choices

  • To take the time to reteach grammar basics

  • To increase students’ abilities in narrative writing
