Pre-Assessment

Pre-Assessment serves two purposes:

     1. It gives the teacher baseline data that helps to tailor instruction for the student(s).

     2. It helps the students see their own progress.

Begin the narrative unit with a short narrative. Don't give the students any pre-instruction, and see how they do. It's best to give some parameters, like "Please write your narrative in the 3rd person point of view," and/or "write at least ____ words." But other than that, it's useful to see how they do with no other instructions.

Example Prompts:

1. Zombies have invaded the town. Write about how it happened, and how one person (your main character) survived the zombie apocalypse.

2. Your favorite character from a book or TV just stepped out of fiction and into this town. Tell the story of how he or she reacted to "real" life here.

3. Create a character with a unique super-power and have him or her battle evil in your short story.

4. "Continuation" prompts: choose a story that you've read as a class and ask the students to write a new ending for it.

5. "Retelling" prompts: Retell ________ with a different character as the main character. OR, for example, retell one of the episodes of the Odyssey in narrative (not epic) style. This can be done with narrative poems, news articles, etc.
