The steps to better writing are at your fingertips.

1. Learn to identify subjects and verbs.

2. Learn the difference between sentences, fragments, and run-ons.

3. Make sure your subjects and verbs agree.

4. Learn to use a variety of sentence Types: Simple, Compound, Complex, and Compound-Complex.

5. Learn to identify and use all different types of phrases to add detail and interest to your writing: Gerund, Participial, Prepositional, Appositive, Infinitive, and Absolute Phrases.

It should go without saying, but make sure you do your own work. The point of this is improvement of YOUR skills, not an empty grade. Always do your best, and look at any failure as a springboard to future success.

No learning happens without struggle. Embrace it.

Why Grammar?

College professors want students who can write. Employers want employees who can write.

It's a universally useful skill - writing. The best way to improve your writing is to understand how our language works, and to apply that knowledge to your writing.

How to use this course

USE the Study section (where you see the ninja on the laptop!) of each module to really learn the concept(s). Each Study Page has links to videos, slideshows, websites, and practice quizzes. Use these to master the skill/concept before taking the mastery challenge. The goal of this course is your mastery of English Grammar basics, not retaking tests over and over until you get lucky.

Take the Mastery Challenge for each module. If you pass, great! if not, look at your mistakes and see if you can figure out what you did wrong. If you can, take the test again. If not, go back and relearn the material.
