Ben Lingenfelter
I have been teaching English for 25 years. In that time, I’ve seen the teaching of (and the learning of) English grammar go from bad to worse to nearly non-existent. At the same time, college professors scream, “Why can’t students write?!? We need them to be able to write!”
If you master this basic grammar course, not only will you do well in every writing section of ELA, Social Studies. and soft science class (psychology and sociology), you’ll be able to read better, too. You’ll be more confident as a writer, and that will affect every class you take.
Even if you don’t continue classes after high school, you will need to be able to communicate effectively in writing – this is true in MANY businesses, and some of you will end up starting your own business someday. Why not increase your abilities so that you have every option open to you for the rest of your lives?
DIrections:
1. USE the Study section of each module to really learn the concept(s). Each Study Page has links to videos, slideshows,
websites, and practice quizzes. The study and practice exercises are designed to help students master the
skill/concept before taking the mastery challenge. The goal of this course is your mastery of English Grammar basics,
not retaking tests over and over until you get lucky.
2. Practice the skills using the practice links - quizzes, fun activities, etc. DO THEM ALL to make sure you understand and
have mastered the skill(s).
3. Take the mastery challenge. Take it several times if necessary. If you pass, great! if not, look at your mistakes and see
if you can figure out what you did wrong. If you can, take the test again. If not, go back and relearn the material.
Repeat these steps as many times as necessary.
